So my question is how do you guys manage this issue? The mix and master sound good everywhere and sit just right with references and the tonal balance I see in spectrum analyzers looks good. Sometimes it's the bass, sometimes it's the lead guitar. Then I go listen to it in the car and it will straight up sound like I cranked up the fader on one instrument. My mix sounds good on all of those things. I also compare against references on all. When I'm feeling good about it, I test it on the crappy Dell G5 laptop speakers, the great Edifier Bookshelf speakers, the Aux-in on a couple guitar amps (mono), my phone speaker, apple earbuds, Bose QC35 Bluetooth, and through soundcloud's compression. I also use an EQ preset to calibrate the headphones and Use Waves NX when mixing in stereo. I only own commerical speakers and headphones/earbuds. Waves NX is such an algorithmic product, and I am hopeful that its the best one yet. I do not yet have a great monitor setup inside. I'm even tempted to go mix in my car with a laptop. Personally I am still new to mixing and I haven't found a way to get past this problem. You go listen to it in the car and there are glaring mistakes that you didn't hear at all in your studio. So that’s why I went for it.It seems like a common problem: you have your mix sounding perfect. ![]() I would rather learn to mix this way than with speakers, if at all possible. In theory, I love this approach because it takes the room completely out of the equation. It’s easy to switch between the simulated speakers and headphones. I do know that sometimes when I turn it on I get the strange feeling that the sound is coming out of speakers, which to me speaks to its effectiveness. My master bus always has Waves NX -> Sonarworks on it. Oh I should also mention, I use it along with Waves NX. It gives me some peace of mind about what I’m hearing. And the price of the software was relatively small compared to the cost of the headphones… I think I would buy it again. They’re really comfortable and sound awesome. How much of it is the headphones? No idea. My mixes get better all the time because I still have a lot to learn. So, have you found it to make your mixing process any easier? Improve your mixes?
